Nature is the natural, physical, material world or universe in its widest meaning. The term “nature” can apply to both physical occurrences and life in general. Nature research is a significant, if not the sole, component of science. Human activity is typically thought of as a distinct category from other natural occurrences, despite the fact that humans are part of nature.

The term nature comes from the Old French word nature, which is derived from the Latin word natura, which means “fundamental traits, intrinsic tendency,” and signified “birth” in ancient times. Natura was most commonly employed in ancient philosophy as a Latin translation of the Greek word physis (), which originally referred to the inherent qualities that plants, animals, and other aspects of the universe create on their own. The concept of nature as a whole, the physical universe, is one of several extensions of the original concept; it began with pre-Socratic philosophers’ core applications of the word (though the word had a dynamic dimension at the time, especially for Heraclitus), and has steadily gained currency ever since. Nature became the passive reality, structured and moved by divine rules, with the introduction of the modern scientific method some centuries ago. With the Industrial Revolution, nature became more perceived as a component of reality outside of deliberate interference, and it was therefore regarded as sacrosanct by certain traditions (Rousseau, American transcendentalism), or as a simple decorum for divine providence or human history by others (Hegel, Marx). However, especially after Charles Darwin, a vitalist view of nature, closer to the presocratic one, was revived at the same time.

“Nature” is commonly used to refer to geology and animals in today’s different meanings of the term. Nature can refer to the overall world of living plants and animals, as well as, in certain circumstances, inanimate item processes—the way that specific sorts of things exist and change on their own, such as the weather and geology of the Earth. It’s often understood to refer to the “natural environment” or wilderness—wild creatures, rocks, forests, and other objects that haven’t been significantly affected by human activity, or that have survived despite it.
